Biography
Born in Saudi Arabia in 1976, he became an accomplished athlete who participated in many local and regional swimming competitions, winning many medals and becoming a national swimming champion. Abumsmar's interest in art emerged early on, as he practiced drawing and photography since the age of twelve, in addition to his professional swimming. In 1996, he opened a joint studio in Al-Miftaha village with several visual artists. In 1998, he studied under the artist Abdul Halim Radwi, one of the pioneers of Saudi contemporary art, which prompted him to think about conceptual art. In addition to his work in the Ministry of Defense in the Graphic Design Department. In 2013 he joined the Mansouria Residence in Paris as part of his Qibla Direction project.
Abumsmar's work often relies on intervening in ready-made objects or merging them together, and he sees them as more symbolic than practical, and that they succeed in influencing our lives on a more subconscious emotional level.. such as Locks, Scalpels, Cardboard Boxes for products, Kite, Canvases, and Barbershop items. These items take on symbolic meanings in popular culture over time; The intervention made by Abu Mismar does not cancel this symbolism, but rather directs it towards a deeper meaning by integrating it. Abu Mismar is not satisfied with making these hybrid pieces, but rather re-places them in multiple contexts to monitor the effect that his sculptures have in the context of daily life. He believes that these moments reveal the truth of his work and that they have become part of his artistic work.
